Nevada Child Car Seat Laws

All states in the nation have child car seat laws in place to help protect infants and children in the event of an accident. Nevada child car seat laws are particularly strict, requiring parents and guardians to stay up to date on the various changes needed depending on a child’s age or size.

If you or your child suffered losses in a car accident, filing a personal injury claim could help you receive fair compensation. Child Car Seat Laws In Nevada

If a child is not old enough to wear a seat belt, they must travel in an appropriate car seat. The exact seat they’ll need will depend on their age and size

Rear Facing Car Seats

Children two years old or younger are at particular risk of suffering catastrophic injuries in an accident, so they must travel in a rear-facing car seat. They must do so until they exceed the weight and height limits specified by the seat’s manufacturer. The state recommends that children remain in rear-facing seats for as long as possible.

Children who are too large to use a rear-facing seat must still be in an age-appropriate restraint.

Forward-Facing Car Seats and Transition to Seat Belts

Keep in mind that children who are 57 inches tall or less and who weigh less than 60 pounds must, by law, be in a child car seat. When a child reaches the age of six and weighs more than 60 pounds, they can transition to wearing a seat belt.

If a child has a medical condition that makes sitting in a car seat dangerous, it’s possible for them to be exempt from using one. However, you must have a signed statement from the doctor in the vehicle at all times.

Front Seat Recommendations

It’s up to each parent to determine when a child is old enough to sit in the front seat. The recommendation is for children 12 and under to travel in the back seat. One of the reasons for this is that a child under that age might not be tall enough for the passenger-side airbag to offer the right level of protection.

Other Concerns and Considerations

Those under the age of 18 may also not ride in the back of a pickup or flatbed truck. This rule generally doesn’t apply to farm vehicles.

A common worry is whether it’s necessary to have a car seat in a taxi or Uber. Nevada law states that car seat laws don’t apply to public transportation, but the law isn’t clear on ridesharing vehicles. If your child needs to be in a car seat, it may be a good option to have one with you if you’re getting an Uber.

Child car seats can reduce the risk of your child suffering an injury in a crash by as much as 82% when compared with only seat belt use. That doesn’t mean that car seats can prevent all injuries, however. If you or a loved one experienced losses in a collision that occurred because of someone else’s negligent or wrongful conduct, the right option could be to file a claim.
