Las Vegas Car Inspection Laws

All residents of Las Vegas, Nevada, must register their vehicles annually in order to legally drive them on the city’s roads. In some states, renewing registration is as simple as paying a fee. However, Las Vegas car inspection laws require drivers to get an annual inspection before renewing their tags.

Getting regular vehicle inspections helps reduce harmful emissions and can alert car owners to issues with their vehicles that could jeopardize their roadworthiness.

After any motor vehicle crash, a Las Vegas car accident lawyer will examine the at-fault vehicle’s registration and recent inspections to see if they’re current and whether any overlooked maintenance issues contributed to the crash. The skilled attorneys at De Castroverde Accident & Injury Lawyers can perform these and other services for you.

5 Facts To Know About Las Vegas Car Inspections

Even though car emissions inspections are a routine part of renewing your registration, you may have questions about this requirement. Here are five things you should know about these inspections.

1. Only Motorists In Certain Counties Must Have Their Vehicles Inspected

The emissions inspection requirement only applies to drivers whose vehicles are located in Clark County or Washoe County. If you reside in any other county, you don’t need to have your vehicle inspected to renew the registration.

If you’re unsure whether you need an inspection, check your annual renewal notice. It will contain information about how to get an emissions inspection if one is required.

2. You Must Pay For Your Emissions Test And Any Necessary Repairs

You must pay the required fee to have your vehicle tested. If it doesn’t pass the emissions test, you’ll also have to pay for any necessary repairs and a follow-up test. These expenses are considered part of your vehicle registration costs.

These costs can add up. However, if your vehicle fails the second emissions test after being repaired, you may be able to receive an inspection waiver.

3. Not All Cars Must Be Inspected

Just because your vehicle is registered in Clark County or Washoe County doesn’t necessarily mean you must have it inspected. Cars made in 1967 or earlier and electric cars are exempt from emissions testing. Additionally, new gas vehicles are exempt from testing for the first three registration years, and new hybrids are exempt from the first five registration years.

4. Driving Without Proper Registration Or Inspections Can Be Costly

Some motorists might be tempted to ignore the inspection requirement and not renew their registration. This is illegal, and police can stop and cite you for non-compliance. If this happens to you, you’ll have 14 days to get your vehicle inspected and your registration renewed, or else face fines and other penalties.

5. You Must Get Your Vehicle Inspected If You Purchased It Or Brought It In From Out Of State

Let’s say you’re moving to Las Vegas from another state, or you traveled to another state to purchase a car or truck. Before you can register your vehicle, you’ll need to schedule an emissions test unless your vehicle is exempted or you receive a waiver. New vehicles purchased in Nevada are exempt from emissions inspections for three years.

Some car owners attempt to circumvent the emissions test, especially when they know their vehicle’s emission system isn’t working properly. If it’s determined that you disconnected your car’s battery or cleared service codes from the onboard computer system without completing the necessary repair, you’ll need to come back later to have the inspection done.
